Upper Credit Humane Society

Treasurer and Director 2015 – 2021

On May 19, 2015 Charles was elected as Treasurer and a Director of UCHS, a volunteer position, for a maximum six years’ term to provide guidance in financial affairs of UCHS.

I happened to visit the post office in Erin in the first week of May 2015, mailing a bunch of letters for clients to CRA. A bright spark serving behind the counter noted I was a Chartered Accountant from my return address. She explained the UCHS required a professional accountant as their Treasurer had retired. I said I would consider it without any promises. Viviane and I attended UCHS’ Annual General Meeting May 19th to learn more about UCHS and those involved.

Before we knew it, I was duly elected Treasurer.

I am pleased to be a member of the Board, which is ably chaired by Dr. Cathy Slaney with support from her team of directors focused in their respective areas of expertise. It is a wonderful experience being part of a dynamic group which is constantly achieving success. Many directors have a close association with the University of Guelph and also have interests with horses.

UCHS after much work by a dedicated group lead by Diane Gibbard launched its revitalized website at the beginning of February 2016 – www.uppercredit.com.

I have delivered the 2015 financial package for the Society’s external accountants – Accountants on Main, Georgetown at the end of February so they may complete their Review Engagement. My job was made easier by having a very capable and dedicated bookkeeper Elizabeth Cosman.

It is good to report  that the UCHS Thrift Shop in Georgetown had record sales in 2015 since the store opened in 2006 – all proceeds support the Shelter’s operations. Also, the Shelter staff have had their own successes with record adoptions in 2015.

However, UCHS did have some untoward changes in 2015. One significant change was the loss of the Town of Erin Dog Control Services contract at December 31, 2015. UCHS has ably served the Town of Erin for over 10 years. I lead a team to respond to the Town’s RFP. We submitted our tender with two other groups. Town council decided to award the 3-years contract to Orangeville OSPCA. It was a personal disappointment especially as we are the only organization within the Town of Erin; however, we are now more committed to being focused on fulfilling our mandate.

UCHS mission: We care, protect, educate and serve by providing for the humane care of animals and encouraging responsible pet ownership.

Organizational objectives:

  • Protect animals in need
  • Maintain high standards of health and welfare in a safe and clean environment
  • Find suitable homes for shelter animals
  • Promote humane treatment of animals through education
  • Uphold municipal animal by-laws
  • Maintain financial stability through donations and fundraising initiatives

It has been a pleasure to give back to our community this past year especially for a cause that touches both Viviane and I.
