Tax Consulting – Farms and Country Estates

There are two parts of my tax practice relating to Farms and Country Estates:

  • Supporting active farmers with annual financial and income tax reporting
  • Tax planning and consulting on purchase and/or sale of farms and country estates 

Active Farmers

Clients include a variety of farming activities:

  • Apiculture
  • Beef cattle
  • Dairy
  • Market garden
  • Thoroughbred horses, including breeding, training and racing
  • Turkey production

Purchase and Sale of Farms and Country Estates

Clients from time to time require tax planning services related to possible sale of farm and country estate properties.

Also, clients have referred my tax planning services to family and friends, who after selling their properties, faced assessments claiming substantial amounts of taxes payable. After providing second tax opinions related to their specific circumstances , I was engaged to deal with the Canada Revenue Agency. Because of my experience and knowledge of the Income Tax Act (Canada) related to farm and country estate properties, I have had success in significantly reducing their taxes payable. There have been cases which required filing Notices of Objection and appealing to the Tax Court of Canada. I have support of tax lawyers when required.

In addition, lawyers have sought tax planning and guidance with respect to clients’ prospective sales of properties. Unfortunately, lawyers’ have also sought tax guidance on behalf of their clients after the sale of their properties and substantial taxes have been assessed. Each situation is different and there are no guarantees that income taxes may be reduced.

Referrals for tax consulting services related to sale of farm and country properties have come from another accounting firm, ACCOUNTANTS on MAIN of Georgetown, whose clients require specialized tax consulting and tax planning. These services include providing tax opinions related to clients’ specific circumstances, which support tax filings and may be made available to the Canada Revenue Agency. Where appropriate, tax schedules and working papers are provided to assist with tax preparation.
